(photo: Connor Sorenson) When Alexi Erenkov and Alison Alderdice got married, Erenkov’s vows weren’t your typical declarations. “They were about our mortality,” says The Saxophones’ drummer Alison Alderdice with a bit of a grin. “The light and the dark and how this marriage will end when one of us dies...It was really romantic, though.” The couple laugh. The Saxophones — vocalist and lyricist Alexi Erenkov, drummer Alison Alderdice and bassist Richard Laws — create music that is gentle and ethereal, layered with woodwinds and rich, serenading vocals. Alderdice shifts their 3-month old on her chest, who looks in my direction [...]

Five things you didn’t know about the Gonks: the album

Hot dog we’re excited to have gotten our hands on the new Gonks album, put out by San Francisco’s Rocks in Your Head Records (Sonny Smith’s babychild). Five Things You Didn't Know About The Gonks arrives November 22 and is led by teen Ava Lynch on vocals and drums, with Sami Perez on vocals and bass. As Smith says, “In the shortest description it has a kind of Shangri La’s meets Tronics thing.” Voila, and we’re sold. “I’m A Lonely Night Driver” is a sweet showcase of Lynch’s vocals and track “My Glamorous Mother” has a solid Kinks feel we’re digging on pretty [...]

Lemonade Releases Self-Titled Debut Tuesday; Shows This Weekend

Our very own frenzied psych-electro outfit Lemonade will release their debut album Tuesday on True Panther Sounds. While filling a niche that is quite sparse in the Bay Area, Lemonade's new project bombards listeners with what they do best - glitchy laptop sounds and synths galore. Lemonade - "Sunchips" The album was recorded by Chris Coady, of TV on the Radio and Blonde Redhead fame, and embraces unconventional and ethnic beats and sounds while maintaining their oft-mentioned DIY aesthetic. The band will play at the Elbo Room this Friday, Oct. 3, at Disco Shawn's monthly Tormenta Tropical Party [...]

Birdmonster is busy preparing for the release of their new album From the Mountain to the Sea, which comes out Aug. 5. In the meantime, they have released two great new songs on their MySpace page and will play two nights at Bottom of the Hill this Sunday and Monday, June 1 and 2, with Superdrag. The new songs have a more polished feel than from their previous album No Midnight, both in musical execution and recording quality.
