Berkeley rapper 100s becomes Kossisko

Remember Berkeley rapper 100s? His 2014 release IVRY, despite the sometimes juvenile lyrics, was hands down one of my favorite releases from ANY genre last year. He had such unbelievable bravado and smooth flows to go with his classic-funk-meets-space-age beats that I was completely hooked. Well, forget all that. As he hinted at the end of the video for "10 Freaky Hoes", 100s is dead (at age 21, no less) and a new persona, Kossisko has taken his place. Here's some additional information on the transformation via his management: “The truth is 100s was supposed to be more of a [...]

Best of 2013: Russell Jelinek's highlights

John Murry (Photo by Amoreena Berg) I don't feel like ranking things, but here are some Bay Area highlights for 2013, limited to artists I wrote about: Favorite Albums: John Murry - Graceless Age: I tried to listen to Graceless Age in the background while doing some work on the computer. It didn't work. Murry punched me in the gut and took me away from whatever I was doing and totally consumed me. The standout "Little Colored Balloons", about Murry's heroin overdose in the Mission, may one of the most heartbreaking songs ever recorded, but there is so much more [...]

100s – "Life of a Mack"

Nineteen (or 20) year old pimp-rap prodigy 100s has been on our radar for a while – after I saw his video for "1999", I guessed he had a good chance at stardom. Sure enough, 100s is taking a more steps in that direction, as his brand new track "Life of a Mack" landed on the Grand Theft Auto V soundtrack. The highlight of the song is the verse where 100s reminisces about 2004, before making a reference to getting liquor despite not yet being 21. As if the GTAV sound track wasn't enough, 100s made his way into millions [...]

September 2 is Hiero Day in Oakland

Oakland's legendary Hieroglyphics Crew is throwing a massive, free, and all ages hip-hop festival on Labor Day known as Hiero Day, taking place at Linden Street Brewery in Oakland. The festival began last year when a Facebook comment suggested a celebration in honor of the breakout Souls of Mischief track "93 'til Infinity". The idea turned into a street festival on San Pablo in Oakland that was so wildly successful that they're bringing it back for another round. The lineup includes local up-and-comers that have recently been mentioned on The Bay Bridged, such as Richie Cunning, The Seshen, A-1, and [...]

Video: 100s – "1999"

Berkeley's 100s released a video for his track "1999", and it confirms that 100s is a star in the making if you didn't catch that already. In making me officially feel old, 100s "throws it back" to the year 1999, when Hype Williams was directing hip hop videos on yachts and Juvenile was a star. Despite the retro sentiment expressed in the song and video, the track sounds as fresh and new as can be. 100s seems to have the foundation of stardom in place as he comes as hard as humanly possible while rocking a black turtleneck and a [...]

Video: 100s – "Hemsworth Outro"

Berkeley rapper 100s just dropped a video for "Hemsworth Outro", which gives us a good excuse to introduce you to a talented MC we should have mentioned a long time ago. While Bay Area hip hop is especially strong in spacey, syrupy cloud rap, 100s brings more of an old-school feel, clearly playing homage to Snoop along with locals artists such as Too $hort and Mac Dre. He released his debut album Ice Cold Perm last September, and L.A. rap critic Jeff Weiss recently declared the album his favorite debut of 2012. The 19-year-old has an interesting background, too – [...]
