Tumbleweed Wanderers premiere video for "Troubador"

Rustic San Francisco balladeers Tumbleweed Wanderers have released a new video for “Troubador," the first single off their upcoming EP, "Worn Down Welcome." The video, as you'll soon see, is a beautiful visual ode to the city. (Raise your hand if your mouth also started watering at the sight of the tinfoil coming off of that burrito.) “Troubador” comes as the first single off their new EP, “Worn Down Welcome,” which they'll be celebrating the release of on Friday by headlining The Indy. They'll also embark on a short tour across the U.S. after, with several stops across the South [...]

Chad Valley, Ski Lodge, and The Soonest coming to Bottom of the Hill, 4/29/13

Ski Lodge (Photo: Luca Venter) Brooklyn jangle pop band Ski Lodge is supporting Chad Valley on a West Coast tour, and San Francisco DIY rockers The Soonest will join them for a show at Bottom of the Hill on Monday, April 29. Ski Lodge recently released a new video for their single "Just To Be Like You" (below), which was recorded and produced by Kevin McMahon, and their self titled 12-inch EP was just released on Dovecote Records. The band was formed in 2011 by Andrew Marr, who is joined by Jared O'Connell, John Barinaga, and Tim McCoy. Brooklyn Vegan [...]

Safe releases 7", remastered EP, and accompanying videos

Berkeley "emotional singer" Safe released a 7-inch vinyl single along with a remastered version of his debut EP last week on Greedhead Music. Safe, aka CF Edley, was once the artistic director for MGMT, so you know he's going to drop some emotional videos for his emotional songs. The video for "Black Satin Living Room" was directed by Brandon Tauszik, who also directed Antwon's outstanding "Living Every Dream" video. A video for "Treason", which is a bonus track on his EP release, follows. Safe will be playing a free show at Treasure Island on Sunday night with Two Gallants and [...]

Bjork re-launches 'Biophilia' show in Richmond, May 2013

Bjork is one of a rare breed of artists who refuses to be pigeonholed. Some attribute brilliance, others say she’s a strange bird (who could forget that swan dress at the 2001 Academy Awards red carpet?) but few can deny that she is one of the most unique visionaries of our time. After all, Bjork is credited with creating the first “app album” in collaboration with Apple, which turns each of the ten songs from the 2011 album Biophilia into an interactive iPad application. At $12.99 it isn’t cheap, but “Bjork: Biophilia” is like ten apps in one. Exploring the [...]

Fuzzy Hunnies release 'Only' LP

Fuzzy Hunnies, fronted by Charlie Musser of Oakland, just released their first studio and full-band LP, Only. Previous recordings had featured Musser alone singing blues over an acoustic guitar, but the full band expanded his sound while still giving his vocals space to wander. While blues elements still exist on the album, it isn't what I'd call straightforward blues. To be honest, I'm not sure what I'd call it, and I think that's a good thing. You can listen to Only below along with a video of Musser singing solo in a West Oakland rail yard (under earlier moniker Charlie [...]

The night features a who’s-who of Bay Area geek rock, including Gnarboots, BLAMMOS!, Curious Quail, Cartoon Violence, and a few others. The Angel and Robot Show emcee. The festivities start at 8pm. Upcoming free shows at UC Berkeley: The Antlers, The Underachievers, Rogue Wave/Geographer

We once asked the question, "What's the matter with Berkeley?", attempting to figure out why the city of Berkeley lacks suitable rock venues. While this is still worthy of discussion, we can take comfort in the fact that the UC Berkeley campus fights the good fight by continuing to provide a fantastic setting for live music, open to anyone and everyone. Here's a list of upcoming shows at Cal (all shows are free and open to the public): Saturday, April 20th (Cal Day): The Antlers, 5:00pm, Memorial Glade Thursday, April 25th: The Underachievers, 8:30pm, Sproul Plaza Friday, April 26th: Rogue [...]

Interview: Bleeding Rainbow on playing in SF and unexpected influences (playing Great American, 4/28/13)

In its relatively short existence, Philadelphia's Bleeding Rainbow has gone through quite the evolution. Originally a duo named Reading Rainbow consisting of spouses Rob Garcia on vocals and guitar and Sarah Everton on vocals and drums, the band is now a full-fledged, hard rocking four-piece (legend has it that indie punk goddess Carrie Brownstein told them Reading Rainbow was a weak name—and when Carrie Brownstein says some shit like that, YOU CHANGE YOUR NAME). The band released two albums as Reading Rainbow: 2010's Prism Eyes, in which the duo explored pop song structures; and, prior to that, the self-released Mystical [...]
