Ty Segall's latest LP 'Sleeper' is out August 20th

Yes, it’s that time again. The one that comes not once, sometimes twice, and often three times a year: Ty Segall is releasing a new record Of course the succession of Segall’s freakishly rapid fire releases can be tracked under many names (Fuzz, Ty Segall Band) but Sleeper, due out on August 20th, 2013 via Drag City, takes us back to his solo roots. The album is Segall’s most recent solo effort since last year’s Twins. With such little time in between Segall’s array of projects and releases, one might wonder if his albums are beginning to blend together, one [...]

Video: Lumerians – "Life without Skin"

The latest song from Oakland's Lumerians (following "The Bloom" and "Dogon Genesis") comes in the form of this Waylon Bacon-directed video for "Life without Skin." The song is a mutating piece of heady psych rock, while the visuals offer some surprisingly affecting suspense. The High Frontier comes out on August 6th and the band is performing in Oakland with Clipd Beaks and 3 Leafs this Saturday night.

Interview: UK electronic pop band Bastille is obsessed with history, film, and Mexican food

It’s appropriate that the popularity of a band with a song about the fiery destruction of an ancient city began to blossom during a storm. Londoners Bastille were playing at a 500-capacity tent at the U.K.’s Isle of Wright about a month after they began gigging as a band. The tent was empty, until it started to pour. By the time they were done, no room remained. “It was, at the time, amazing to play to that many people in one go,” 26-year-old Bastille vocalist and keyboardist Dan Smith said. Smith doesn’t credit the downpour for boosting the band to [...]

Editors’ Picks: What We’ve Been Listening to This Week (Mikal Cronin, Weekend, James The Giant)

Anna: All Mikal Cronin, all day long. I cannot explain why or how this happens, but Mikal's MCII has the ability to both energize and soothe, acting as the perfect antidote to the stressed and weary brain. I cannot get enough of this record. I'm not prone to saying things like "is it too early to call this my favorite album of 2013?!?!" . . . but there it is. (P.S. If you haven't already, be sure to watch Mikal's recent performance on CONAN.)   Ben: It still feels a little weird to tack on "Brooklyn-via-" [...]

Video: Kai Straw – "The American Dream (Suburban Part 1)"

San Francisco's Kai Straw is a MC and producer on a mission. "I'm looking to take a steak knife to the heart of hip-hop and replace it with a grinding engine pumping battery acid, art, honesty and beautiful and/or ugly music," he explained to me via email. He also isn't a fan of much of the Bay Area hip-hop scene. "As a city, San Francisco is known to be forward thinking...Yet our rap scene is full of materialistic, objectifying, drug-addled songs that attempt to compensate for their own stupidity through drowning all of it in trunk-rattling bass." When you listen [...]

Colleen Green, SISU, Burnt Palms playing ProFans show @ Cafe Du Nord

Professional Fans are at it again with another Grade A California showcase featuring Colleen Green, SISU, and Burnt Palms at Cafe Du Nord on Monday, July 22. Hardly Art sweetheart Colleen Green (West LA) released her debut LP with the label in March. Following the Ramones and Descendents-inspired themes of her early releases Cujo and Milo Goes To Compton, her new album Sock It To Me soaks up the sunny sounds of sad girl stoner pop and rings them out with a sense of gloomy lo-fi flair. Watch the video for "Taxi Driver" below, and catch Colleen wearing her signature [...]

Video: John Vanderslice – "How the West Was Won"

It's quite appropriate that John Vanderslice's new video for "How the West Was Won" happens to feature Tiny Telephone, and that we're featuring it now, seeing as we just wrapped up Phono del Sol 2013 - a festival located right next to Tiny Telephone, and an event that originally developed out of a collaboration with JV and his local studio. As JV himself says about the video: I wanted to make a performance video that was more like a documentary of recording at Tiny Telephone. Jake kept everything naturalistic and loose. I love the musicians and engineers who work at [...]
