Sun Araw, Matthewdavid, more play Oakland's Peralta Palace this Saturday

There's a fairly big party going down this Saturday at Oakland's Peralta Palace. Pretty Blue Presents and Sick Sad World have joined forces and (wait for it...) formed "Voltron," a nine and a half hour music marathon featuring Sun Araw, Matthewdavid, Jel, and more. From 5:30pm till 3:00am, 2441 Peralta St will be filled with a cornucopia of sounds ranging from hip hop to psych-rock to downtempo beats - a theme captured nicely by the wild flyer you see above, designed by Jordan Deherrera. The show costs a mere $10 at the door. The full line up also includes Morris, [...]

Interview: Il Gato launches Kickstarter campaign for new record

Il Gato plans to record the follow-up to their debut studio album, All these Slippery Things, at Tiny Telephone in May and June, with the hopes that they can release it by August. But like many cash-strapped musicians, they don't have the funds to make it happen. If you wanna hear that new album sooner than later, there's something you can do to make it happen. Il Gato has started a Kickstarter campaign to give their loyal fans an opportunity to help them out. As a plea/thank you to their supporters, Il Gato plans to play a show at Cafe [...]

My favorite show of SXSW 2012: Dustin Wong – playing tonight at Hemlock!

Every year, my favorite show from SXSW is a show I didn't plan on seeing. That's what's really magical about the annual clusterfuck/music festival in Austin, TX: There are so many bands playing — everywhere you go — that you can't help but catch sets by numerous bands you've never even heard of. And, invariably, it's one of those bands who totally blow me away every year. This year it was Dustin Wong, formerly of Ponytail but now a solo artist with two albums out on Thrill Jockey. Sure, I caught sets by Youth Lagoon, Grimes, Coasting, White Fence, Schoolboy [...]

Tonight: Dustin Wong (of Ponytail), Woodsman, Moonbell @ Hemlock Tavern

We've been waiting all month for tonight's Dustin Wong (ex-Ponytail) show at the Hemlock with Woodsman (CO) and local opener, the dream-gazey Moonbell (9pm, $7). Dustin Wong released his second album this February on ThrillJockey (Dreams Say, View, Create, Shadow Leads), and it's an ultimately shiny, technical record with hundreds of loops and ambient sounds structured in. We heard great things about his live performances out at SxSW this year, and for those that missed out tonight is the chance to see Wong, as his tour continues with Woodsman (tour dates after the jump). It's always interesting to hear about [...]

Girls playing at Bimbo's on April 11th

Here's a special treat for Girls fans: the band will be at Bimbo's - a super classy establishment if there ever was one - on April 11th, and tickets are still available (9:00pm, $22/advance, $25/door, 18+). Not only that, but as of this posting, no other bands are listed on the bill. That means a full evening's worth of Girls and everything they have to offer.
