Australia's Twerps on tour with Real Estate, playing Great American tonight, 4/24/12

For their self-titled debut LP, Australia’s Twerps embrace the musical antecedents of that region -- Aussie bands like Go-Betweens and The Church, and the Kiwi Dunedin Sound championed by Flying Nun Records (based out of Christchurch, actually) and Xpressway -- as well as the band’s contemporaries. Twerps is a collection of eleven simple and endearing pop songs. On the sing-along track, "Who Are You," perhaps a nod to the pub-rock scene popularized in the 1980s, the band is joined by members of Eddy Current Suppression Ring, Beaches, and Panel of Judges all chorusing, "We'll get drunk/ We'll get stoned/ We'll [...]

Tonight: Screaming Females play Bottom of the Hill in support of Albini-recorded 'Ugly' LP

With seven years as a band and over 700 live performances under their belt, New Brunswick's Screaming Females show no signs of slowing down. The band released their fifth (and first Albini-recorded) LP Ugly this month on Don Giovanni Records, and the record is already being heralded as one of the best albums of the year: fourteen tracks billed as the “perfect combination of raw energy and honed musicianship,” and definitely their tightest and strongest record yet. Screaming Females – “Expire” Screaming Females' live show is fire; Marissa Paternoster shreds and wails vibrato into the mic, while King Mike’s fast [...]

Free Dr. Dog show at UC Berkeley this Saturday

Over the eleven years that Dr. Dog has been making people smile with their music, the Philadelphia quintet has always showed plenty of love to the Bay Area and Northern California. On top of annual multi-night runs at The Independent and Fillmore, they've played Treasure Island, Hardly Strictly Bluegrass, High Sierra, and will complete our local festival circuit this August when they rock Outside Lands. So it's no surprise that UC Berkeley tapped the group to close out their 2012 Cal Day this Saturday, with a free show on the campus's Memorial Glade at 4pm. No student ID is required [...]

Video: Ty Segall & White Fence – "Scissor People" / "I Am Not A Game"

If you're a fan of psych/garage rock, then there's probably nothing I can say to get you more hyped about the Ty Segall and White Fence album Hair, to be released April 24 on Drag City. All the same, you're going to want to check out this video of Ty Segall and Tim Presley (a.k.a. White Fence) jamming Hair-track "Scissor People" in Room 205. Rounding out the psych rock super-group is Mikal Cronin on bass and Nick Murray on drums. If you still can't get enough and April 24 seems too long a wait, tide yourself over with a Room [...]

Video: Jon Porras – "Into Midnight"

As we announced here, Jon Porras' solo album Black Mesa will be available April 17 through Thrill Jockey records. The eight and a half minute video (filmed by Porras himself) provides a retro, black and white film accompaniment to the drawling post-rock guitar of "Into Midnight." When the song picks up half-way through, the video begins follows a cloaked man — named the "Desert Spectre" — as he wanders through rolling hills, a worthy visual metaphor for the song's rise-and-fall delay effects.

Sarah Neufeld (Arcade Fire) at Hotel Utah on May 1 with Gregory Rogove & Colin Stetson

Arcade Fire violin player and solo musician Sarah Neufeld — not to be confused with Arcade Fire cofounder (and Win Butler's wife) Régine Chassagne — will bring her violin flare to the Hotel Utah on May 1st with two other strays from mega-popular indie bands: Gregory Rogove from Devendra Banhart's backing band, performing a minimalist piano set, and Colin Stetson of Bon Iver adding some groovy solo saxophone work. The tour is called "Alone Together" — which may or may not be a reference to how everyone feels when they use the internet. Speaking of the internet, check out some [...]
