Download: new single from Skeletal System – “Small Talk” / “Static Eyes”

Oakland duo Skeletal System have a new single up on Bandcamp to download free. It was recorded with Jay Pellici at New, Improved Recording in Oakland, also the home to our N,I,L Sessions. The song set surely builds on the duo's haunting electronic styling (need I say, Dark Wave?) -- and the recording studio gives these songs way more justice than could any venue in this city. Complimentary physical copies are available at Skeletal System's shows. Cover art by SF-based designer Noele Lusano.

San Francisco Film Society presents ‘Sir Arne’s Treasure’, featuring John Darnielle (the Mountain Goats)

Photo by: Nicole Browner Back in 1919, a Swedish film told the story of three Scottish mercenaries who kill, steal, and fall in love - all in one tumultuous silent melodrama, entitled "Sire Arne's Treasure": Set in the 16th century against a particularly unforgiving winter landscape, Sir Arne’s Treasure is Swedish master Stiller’s haunting tale of murder, betrayal and divine redemption. This epic journey begins with the escape from captivity of three Scottish mercenaries who go on to slay the local parson - Sir Arne - and nearly all of his kin. After stealing his treasure, which is rumored to carry a [...]

The Definite Articles performs as a 14-piece for two record release shows

The Definite Articles is a band of appreciable size and aspiration; they spent three years putting together King Merriweather, which they will perform in its entirety tonight and tomorrow at the found venue of a Presbyterian church (32 Ocean at Mission). Each night includes a different Sacramento-based folk rock supporting act -- understandable, for the headliners transplanted from that area down to the Bay Area just a few years ago. Friday's will be DoomBIRD and Saturday's is Sea of Bees. And if you show up Saturday, you'll be surprised with a guest performance (my lips are sealed). The Definite Articles [...]

Mixtape: The Many Sides of Tim Cohen (Podcast #238)

Mixtape: The Many Sides of Tim Cohen (Podcast #238) Our latest mixtape showcases the many sides of one of San Francisco's best and most prolific musicians, Tim Cohen. Cohen's latest band, The Fresh & Onlys, have been seemingly unstoppable as of late, with a series of terrific singles culminating in the acclaimed Play It Strange. As prolific as The F&Os are, it's insane that the band's released so many great records. This mix reveals that the same principle--quality and quantity--extends to Cohen's other work as well. No matter what sound he's tackled in recent years, from the experimental collage-pop of [...]

Video: Tennis, Eulogies at Hotel Utah 11/14 That many people walked out of the Hotel Utah Sunday night without warm fuzzies, a Tennis 7" or two in hand, or the conclusion that he or she had just discovered their new "band to watch," is highly doubtful. It was packed to the brim with people excited to see Tennis' first San Francisco show, just as I had expected. For me, this meant finding a spot to sit on the floor down in front, limited to bobbing my head and no chance of cutting a rug. But behind me, I saw those little sardines swaying back and forth.
