Interview: Sic Alps discuss Napa Asylum, getting by on tour, and why their live show is better than ever

Sic Alps - "Do You Want To Give $$?" Hot on the heels of the release of their double LP Napa Asylum, Sic Alps' Matt Hartman and newest member Noel von Harmonson were gracious enough to chat with us about the band's new kick-ass record, tour hobbies, and some of their musical leanings. Be sure to catch them on February 9, as part of the all star lineup (also including Thee Oh Sees, Ty Segall, The Sandwitches) at the Coalition on Homelessness Benefit at the Great American Music Hall, before they embark on a US tour in just a few [...]

Song Premiere: Shannon and the Clams – “Sleep Talk”

Shannon and the Clams - "Sleep Talk" Happy Monday - this morning we're proud to debut the first song from Shannon and the Clams' upcoming full-length, Sleep Talk, out in April on 1-2-3-4-Go! Records. This band has been wowing us through and through with beautiful 50s-tinged, Motown stylings, and the album's title track does just that, with modern sass and a little Latin flavor. We're equally excited that they're joining the Noise Pop Festival for the very first time via The Bay Bridged Happy Hour at Bender's on Feb. 25 (5-8pm, FREE) with Jake Mann and the Upper Hand and [...]

Grem (Weekend’s Shaun Durkan) covers Chris Isaak’s “Wicked Game”

Where do guys in busy touring bands find the time to also have side projects? In any event, Weekend's Shaun Durkan has been recording noisy, droney works as Grem, and has a handful of tracks up on Bandcamp at present. One of those songs is the above reinterpretation of "Wicked Game," originally done by SF indie rock icon/thespian (ahem) Chris Isaak. I'll now wait patiently for a video of Durkan and a model hanging out on the beach. For reference, the original is below, as is the complete collection of Grem songs on Bandcamp.

Bare Wires – “Don’t Ever Change”/”Ready to Go” 7″ out March 7

Bare Wires - Don't Ever Change from Daniel Hilsinger on Vimeo. Bare Wires have truly captured an era on their upcoming 7" on the UK label Robot Elephant Records -- upbeat, classic garage rock with all the proper guitar hooks, just sweet enough to sing along. We've been enjoying the video for "Don't Ever Change" for some time, but the b-side on the 7" is "Ready to Go," an equally fun song (below). Bare Wires received some love from NPR as a Song of the Day this past month, as well. Track 2 Ready To Go by Robot Elephant Records [...]

Big Eagle - "Anywhere the Wind Blows" Known musically as Big Eagle, Robyn Miller just released her first album, Willow Creek. Big Eagle will be performing at the latest (((folkYEAH!))) Winter Residency show at Slim's on February 8th (8pm, $5). Also playing are Jeffertitti's Nile, Farmer Dave Scher, Jason Simon (of Dead Meadow) [...]

Michael Beach – A Horse/The Exhilarating Rise 7″

Michael Beach relocated to SF last year after a number of years in Australia, where he was a founding member of the psych rock band Electric Jellyfish. He's currently working on his second solo album, and, in advance of that, releasing this 7" on Twin Lakes Records. Music like this is why "singer-songwriter" is a better descriptor of a role than a genre; the label doesn't seem adequate to capture the raw, vulnerable beauty of these songs. Beach performs at the Hemlock Tavern on February 8th (9pm, $6) with Lazarus and Colossal Yes. The show doubles as a kickoff for [...]

Tommy Guerrero’s ‘Lifeboats and Follies’ record release, Saturday 2/5/11 @ du Nord

Tommy Guerrero, the musician who doubles as a skateboarder, has a new album out now, the latest since 2007's Return Of The Bastard. The release of Lifeboats and Follies will be celebrated this Saturday, February 5th at Cafe du Nord, along with "special guests" (9:30 pm, $12, 21+). Tommy Guerrero - "Que S'est-il Passe" Tommy's prolific career has managed to stretch beyond the Bay Area, and yet he always stays true to his roots, as evidenced in this "Syndicate" video, which shows many faces of our fair city. This video was created as "a day with TG in SF" in [...]

Video: Yours Truly’s session with Papercuts at The Common

http://vimeo.com/19411398 Papercuts - "Do What You Will" The perfectly set tone completes the video for a new track from Papercuts, "Do You Really Wanna Know." An open warehouse space with bright wood floors, the admiring spectators with wine in hand, every element of the scene is natural. Or is it? Yours Truly held a private party at The Common for the filming of their recent Papercuts session, providing refreshments and a warm atmosphere to their guests. I must say, it really felt as if we were part of the creative process. Attentively listening to tracks from Papercuts' upcoming Sub Pop [...]

Win a pair of tickets to see Yo La Tengo at the Fox!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=17zFF3Wu2A8 Yo La Tengo - "Periodically Double or Triple" Of all the things one might expect from Yo La Tengo, I doubt that a game-show style wheel of chance was on anyone's list. But, lo, on their latest nationwide tour, the band is making extra-sure that every show is special, with an element of uncertainty that should make things very interesting. To allow them to explain: For our January/February tour dates, we’ve decided to take the advice of Blood, Sweat & Tears to “ride a painted pony/let the spinning wheel spin.” And just in case that’s not self-explanatory, read on. [...]
