Photo Credit: Brett Johnson Portland-based Moon Duo is coming to the New Parish on November 23 to play jams off their latest, disco-inspired album, Stars Are the Light. Duo Ripley Johnson and Sanae Yamada bust out their guitar-driven psych rock with a masterful hold on their spacey synthesizers. The baselines carry a world of sounds that all morph into trippy soothing lands. Praise to Prince on high. Stars Are the Light by Moon Duo Says Yamada of their new album: “...We were also very inspired by the space and community of a disco – a space of free self-expression through dance, fashion, [...]
The Seshen release “Dive” video and song ahead of new album
“Dive,” released on November 5, is the first single released off forthcoming album CYAN, the third full LP from East Bay-based the Seshen. Vocalist Lalin St. Juste brings sensual passionate umph that is both audibly and visually captivating. Their messages are empowering and tell stories of regaining strength and as Lalin puts it, the album is about, “The path towards my power, my strength, being okay with being unapologetic is just starting. I’m reclaiming what I have lost and what has been passed down to me…This song is about the ground beginning to shake.” Yes. Please enjoy this groundshaking video [...]
Andrew Duhon brings solid country to Milk Bar
Country fans unite! This Saturday, Throwin' Bo's presents another Milk Bar show that we’re pretty pleased for. Headlining the evening is Andrew Duhon, the Grammy-nominated artist rolling out from New Orleans. This fellow is one of the rare country rock folks that you can’t find on the mainstream country stations with, as Rolling Stone says, a “soulful croon.” He’s a modern country man with solid messages and—unlike some of his modern country brethren—none of that cheesy stuff some of his peers are rockin’ out. He’s solid country rock with a warm rich voice that doesn’t overdo it. The video for [...]
Cat Power plays the Fillmore November 1
Photo credit: Eliot Lee Hazel We are happy to announce that Cat Power--known off stage as Chan Marshall--will be playing The Fillmore as part of her 2019 North American headlining tour. Her tenth album, Wanderer, came out last fall and it is just what we’ve come to expect from Marshall. Songs are captivatingly soothing and sometimes surprising. Track “Horizon” has some auto-tune moments we weren’t expecting but that flow well with the tune. We’re intrigued and excited to see how her new effects live. Says Marshall, “...Wanderer, the album, represents the course my life has taken in this journey – [...]
Night Moves bust moves at Bottom of the Hill Sept 19
Photo credit Elise Tyler This Thursday, September 19 Night Moves is gracing the Bottom of the Hill stage. Their latest album, Can You Really Find Me(produced by Spoon's Jim Eno) came out last June and it’s a diverse collection that showcases the range of these fellows. Tracks go from alternative indie rock to Tom Petty-ian moments and some country twangs and harmonies that we can get behind. “Keep Me In Mind” has some of the sweetest harmonies on the album, reminiscent of Crosby Stills & Nash. If you need a little taste of their humor, check out their video for “Strands [...]
Courtney Barnett comes solo to Sonoma
If this spring’s single “Everybody Here Hates You” is an indicator of Courtney Barnett’s forthcoming album, well, la dee da, we’re stoked. The title is one some of us can relate to, and the work she’s been putting out has really honed in on that funny-classy combination of rock and roll that we just cannot get enough of. Barnett will be playing some more intimate-than-normal shows this fall and blessed be, she’s coming to Sonoma on February the 2nd. Why are we telling you so early? Because they’ll sell out, ya dingus. Courtney Barnett Redwood Barn February 2, 2020 8 [...]
LA’s Rose Dorn make their Bay Area debut next month
(photo: Derec Patrick) Rose Dorn just released the video for “Champ” off their forthcoming album, Days You Were Leaving (out August 23 on Bar/None Records). This video rates high amongst those who enjoy the mesmerizing fall of the domino set against emo alternative pop-rock, and we mean that in a really solid way. Props to the handmade domino set, the vintage attire and the mildly spooky grandma house setting. Music video aside, Rose Dorn is truly a listening pleasure. It’s post punk dream-rock and warm twanging guitars. The Rose Dorn trio says they were just “…Valley Kids who dug weird [...]

Baybs release “You’re the Only One”
We are grateful to Baybs for bringing us this summery tune just at the the peak of that I-don’t-want-summer-to-be-over-yet feeling. Baybs, the duo of Craig Jacobs and Melissa Russi, just appeared on the scene and busted out some tunes on Honey House Records (recorded over at Light Rail Studios). Those Honey House folks sure know how to pick ‘em. “You’re the Only One” is a happy, folk pop tune with a Magnetic Fields meets Tennis vibe. There's surfy guitars, the lyrics are poetic and charming, and mm a refreshingly solid bridge. Any song that ends in “Purr” gets a couple [...]
Boy Scouts release balloon-filled video for “Get Well Soon”
Boy Scouts at Phono del Sol 2019 (photo: Ian Young) For anyone having a low day, a tough time, or who just enjoys colorful moments watching balloons doing what they were born to do, we recommend viewing the new video for Boy Scouts’ “Get Well Soon,” off their forthcoming album, Free Company. The song captures Taylor Vick's vocals in their most perfect range, accompanied by ultimately harmonized folksy guitars and catchy-soothing lines and melodies. We recommend waiting for that pure moment at the end of the video where there’s a laugh and a smile. Stay tuned for Free Company off [...]
