Volunteers wanted for 2016 Phono del Sol!

The 2016 Phono del Sol Music & Food Festival is almost here (Saturday, July 9th) and we need your help to make it happen! Volunteers at Phono del Sol assist our day-of production team in a variety of critical event production tasks in two hour shifts day-of. In exchange for their time helping out, all volunteers are given free entry to the festival. As always, day-of shifts are first come, first serve. Interested? Fill out this Volunteer form and we will get back to you soon with more information. Volunteers are an integral part of Phono del Sol, and your help is greatly appreciated! Rexx Life Raj to hold ‘Father Figure’ listening party at Midsummer Studios in Emeryville

The other night I spent (probably too much) time talking with a friend about the importance of hip-hop and rap being geographically contingent. West Coast hip-hop doesn't sound like East Coast hip-hop. Rap from the South sounds nothing like rap from the Bay Area. But each artist uses creative embellishments and stylings to tell a story about their hometown, and to musically map the place they grew up. Because of this, it's no wonder that Bay Area hip-hop and rap have charted themselves onto the map for decades. We recently did a post highlighting over a dozen new Bay Area rap and hip-hop artists, and the [...]

Video: 2015 Phono del Sol recap (+ win a pair of GA tickets to 2016 Phono del Sol!)

We're at the home stretch to our 6th Annual Phono del Sol Music and Food Festival! Less than a month away, this year's festival is slated to be our largest yet, with Chairlift, Alvvays, Born Ruffians, Mr Little Jeans and Bay Area locals Adam Vida, The Seshen, The She's, Hot Flash Heat Wave, and Dick Stusso all set to perform at the festival. We'll also have local food trucks and vendors to turn a day of music into a full fledged event (like every year!). Needless to say, we're beyond excited. However, without acknowledging where we've been we can't do well moving forward (feel [...]

Join us for a free show with Dick Stusso at Optical Underground this Friday

We're officially kicking off our Phono del Sol festivities this weekend with the first of our two Pre-Parties. This Friday, we bring An Intimate Show with Dick Stusso, the moniker which Oakland-based Nic Russo performs his country-folk-rock music under. The story is vaguely nostalgic to music lovers who have imagined the music business to be one of desperate and broke artists who are looking for the right way to have their art be heard. His debut release Nashville Dreams/Sings The Blues takes that story and turns it into the narrative of an artist with love for rock n' roll and the [...]

SOSUPERSAM + STWO set to takeover 1015 Folsom this Thursday

I can admit it - I'm a sucker for slow jams and R&B. So it wasn't a surprise that during my trips back to Los Angeles I ended up at the acclaimed 143 party, where that music prevails, the air is sweeter, and the music is slower. That's when I first saw SOSUPERSAM, the Soulection producer / artist who has been taking the scene by storm with her hip-hop, R&B and electronic infused sound. Her recent releases, the "SUP" series, is a compilation of some original tracks mixed with some familiar songs from some nostalgic names (i.e. Janet Jackson and Common). But the beauty [...]

Ticket Giveaway: Kelley Stoltz + Magic Trick at The Chapel tomorrow!

The first time I ever saw Kelley Stoltz live was at The Chapel about a year and half ago. It was all a sort of fantastic memorable. He sat down and the audience sang along to some of their favorite tunes. There's no denying the sort of hometown glory Stoltz has in San Francisco. He's from the city, and while he has played all around the world and been on labels as big as Sub-Pop, he's remain true to his Beatles-meets-Kinks-meets-Beach Boys sound and style. https://soundcloud.com/kelley-stoltz/hot-igloo-fromthe-scuzzy-inputs-of-willie-weird Pair that up with Tim Cohen (of The Fresh & Only's) most recent project, Magic Trick, [...]

Wax Idols and HUNNY play Milk Bar this weekend

Oakland-bred Wax Idols are hitting the Haight Street venue with Southern California-based nu-new wave group HUNNY this weekend, and it's bound to be a ball. Wax Idols most recent release — American Tragic — is notoriously that: an album centered around break-ups that also pledges the great nature of independence and rallies in the importance of being united. The group has moved far beyond their debut album Discipline + Desire and into a gloomy, dark, post-punk sounds that is notable. HUNNY, who recently performed as part of Noise Pop 2016 at the Independent, takes elements of The Cure and other nostalgic new wave acts [...]
