Video Premiere: Dance through the Sunset with Sunset Super

Sunset Super is a new duo formed by a couple of longtime pals, Tim Tyson and Alex Swain. Swain and Tyson grew up together in Southern California and have been in various bands since the third grade, most recently in Mahgeetah. Swain, who began his musical career working with producer Dan the Automator and associated acts Deltron 3030 and Dr. Octagon, told me he's always been looking for a way to showcase Tyson's music and lyrical ability, and Sunset Super is how they are making it happen. Today, we're happy to present Sunset Super's debut video for "I Did Not [...]

And although Mall Walk is finished, we don't need to get too down, as we're sure to see members of the band in some of their many other projects, including Dick Stusso and Blues Lawyer. Blues Lawyer shares track from debut LP

Blues Lawyer, the East Bay's premier supergroup if there ever was one, just announced their debut LP, Guess Work, set for a May release on Emotional Response and Vacant Stare. Featuring members of the World, Preening, Mall Walk, and Dick Stusso himself, Blues Lawyer only needs a minute and a half to get you hooked with the first song they've shared, "Unstable." "Unstable" gives you the feeling this is the most upbeat project anyone in the band is working on, even as it's mutually commiserating over a lack of mental stability. You can preorder the Guess Work LP via Emotional [...]

Video Premiere: Swiftumz, “Game Six”

Swiftumz released a 7" single "Game Six" on Fruits and Flowers late last year, and today we're pleased to share the accompanying visuals for "Game Six," shot and directed by Anthony Marchitiello. The mini-film was shot at Marchitiello's home in Monte Rio and stars his children, who add an innocent and almost uplifting element to songwriter Christopher McVicker's heartbreaking, grief-filled song. It's still sad as hell, but there's light at the end of the tunnel. Marchitiello, who co-directed Turn It Around: The Story of East Bay Punk has collaborated with Swiftumz previously, most recently on the video for the "Game [...]

Spooky Mansion share “Torture” from forthcoming LP

(photo: Kristin Cofer) San Francisco's Spooky Mansion are back with a brand-new track "Torture" off their forthcoming LP Alright. As usual, the track is dominated by Grayson Converse's impassioned wails supported by toe-tapping rhythm and a catchy-as-hell recurring riff. It's a win. Alright, which was co-produced by Alexi Glickman of Sandy's, will join Spooky Mansion on a few West Coast dates, ending with an April 26 co-release show at Rickshaw Stop. Sandy's, Spooky Mansion, White Knuckles Rickshaw Stop April 26, 2018 8pm, $10

The Saxophones announce debut LP on Full Time Hobby

(Photo of and by The Saxophones) Bay Area duo the Saxophones have developed a bit of a following across the pond, with UK label Full Time Hobby releasing a 7" earlier this year and an EP in 2017. The label also just announced the forthcoming release of the Saxophone's debut full-length, Songs of the Saxophones, set for a June 1 release. The debut track from the album, "Picture," is available for streaming now. Saxophones lead singer and songwriter Alexi Erenkov says the song is sung from the point of view of an entitled California surfer who is "on the verge [...]

B. Hamilton shares ‘Covers of Others’

Oakland trio B. Hamilton just released a collection of cover songs, appropriately entitled Covers of Others. The project began as a reward for their Indiegogo campaign to mix and master their album Fight Everything — anyone who donated $100 to their Indiegogo campaign was allowed to choose a song for the band to cover. Originally intended to be a quick one-mic live recording, it eventually morphed into a proper album recorded by B. Hamilton (and Once and Future Band) drummer Raj Ojha. The collection is not really tied in any particular way, with covers of folks such as Brian Eno, [...]

Get To Know: Almas Fronterizas

(photo: Jaimes Rodriguez, styled by J.C. Luna of Barrio Dandy) Almas Fronterizas is a band out of Oakland. They mostly sing in Spanish, but please don't use that to try to pigeonhole them into...anything. They've created their own genre and it's some of the most unique and goddamn cool music I've heard in 2018. Their visuals for "El Barrio" couldn't be more perfect — it's a great introduction to the trio. Trust me, you need this band in your life: Their most recent release, the Rosa Tropical EP, is available on vinyl via Bandcamp. Get your taste of the [...]

SOB x RBE announces debut album ‘Gangin’

SOB x RBE, one of the most exciting new hip-hop groups in the country, much less the Bay, just announced the release of their debut proper album Gangin, set for a February 23 release. They also contributed a song to the Kendrick Lamar-curated Black Panther soundtrack that will be out February 9. On the hook-less lead single from Gangin, "Carpoolin'," DaBoii sets the tone with the intensity you'd expect from him, while Yhung TO showcases his improving rap skills on the second half. SOB x RBE will perform at the Fox in Oakland March 17 followed by a West Coast [...]
