Behind the Scenes: The Coathangers

The Coathangers (photo: Estefany Gonzalez) Laurel Thatcher Ulrich once wrote "Well-behaved women seldom make history" — a quote which now appears on cups, T-shirts, and bumper stickers. If the iconic quote considers quiet women well-behaved, the roar of the Coathangers live shows are bound to write the band a place in history. The 2018 Noise Pop Music and Arts Festival kicked off at the tail end of a three-day weekend, and there was no better way to spend what the Coathangers dubbed “Not My Presidents Day” than by being surround in a room full of a diverse concert-goers at gig that [...]

Behind The Scenes: Overcoats at the Independent

Overcoats (photo: Estefany Gonzalez) As the new year begins, we look back on Overcoats show at the Independent. The concert marked the duo's 96th show of the year, a number the pair calculated in their tour van on the way to play in San Fransisco. The electronic-pop duo consists of  JJ Mitchell and Hana Elion, two best friends who focus on bringing a sense of sisterhood to their music. While the songs are full of deep, meaningful lyrics, the tunes also hold a strong energetic quality. The tracks are empowering, relatable and a blast druing live shows. Inside Look: Travis Hayes recaps Fog City Fest

Travis Hayes (photo: Estefany Gonzalez) To celebrate the three-year anniversary of Fog City Songwriters, a quarterly event which allows artists to showcase their work an intimate setting, Bay Area musician Travis Hayes took a break from planning his wedding and recording a new record to put on a three-day music festival at Neck Of The Woods titled Fog City Fest. Behind The Scenes: The Front Bottoms at the Regency

The Front Bottoms (photo: Estefany Gonzalez) The Front Bottoms  played the Recency Ballroom two times — wait no, three times, a fan reminded singer Brian Sella from the audience at the Regency on November 6. The punk-folk outfit consisting of Sella and drummer Mathew Uychich have played countless festivals including Lollapalooza, ACL Music Festival, Panorama, Coachella, and you might have caught them on TV while watching NBC’s Late Night with Seth Meyers. Together, the New Jersey duo write honest, heartfelt compositions with wonderfully specific lyrics that share snippets of their lives. Sella's memorable guitar riffs are balanced out by Uychich's high-energy drum beats and [...]

Photos: Yeah Yeah Yeahs at the Fox Theater

Yeah Yeah Yeahs (photo: Estefany Gonzalez) In 2003 Yeah Yeah Yeahs released Fever to Tell, a record that stands the test of time 15 years later — fans gathered at a sold-out show at the Fox Theater in Oakland to celebrate the reissue of the group's debut album. It's been four years since Yeah Yeah Yeahs last hit the stage, yet the crowd at the Fox Theater still remembered every word to classic songs such as "Pin" and "Maps." The concert was one of a select few performances to celebrate the Limited Edition Deluxe Box Set of the album, which features the [...]

Photos: OK Go at the Fillmore

OK Go (photo: Estefany Gonzalez) Have you ever stopped to wonder how much money OK Go spend on confetti each year? Maybe you've had questions about selfies you've seen on Damian Kulash's Instagram or you've wondered if Tim Nordwind's glasses are prescription? Well, in true OK Go fashion, the band broke the barrier between the audience and the stage by taking questions from fans throughout the set and of course sprayed the audience down with so much confetti, I found pieces of colored paper on my person for days after seeing the band. The night was full of classic dancing, OK Go songs, [...]

Photos + Review: Second Annual Uncool Halloween Concert

SWMRS (photo: Estefany Gonzalez) Growing up in Santa Rosa where all ages venues are few and far between, gave me a special appreciation for house shows and concerts at The Phoenix Theater—AKA the Gilman Street of the North Bay for those of you who aren't familiar. There will always be a special place in my heart for these types of shows because of the togetherness they inspire and the live energy present amongst a group of crowd surfing and moshing music lovers. It's rare to see this same intimacy and close-knit community vibe at large venues, yet SWMRS managed to bring [...]
