Miserable And Better Than Ever: Kristina Esfandiari looks back on the Bay

(photo: Mary Manning) Words by Jordan Martich Twelve years ago, when Kristina Esfandiari – vocalist for gloom-rockers King Woman and proprietor of dark pop in Miserable – began calling the Bay Area home, she says she didn't have the resources she does now. She remembers the early days of Whirr, before her departure, playing at lost venues like SUB-Mission and staples like Hemlock Tavern. “When I moved out here it was all garage rock,” said Esfandiari. “There was nowhere for me to play shows, and when I started playing with King Woman, we kind of realized that we could make [...]

Sponsored: RX Bandits relive your youth at The UC Theatre next month

RX Bandits have had an absurdly long career. Born out of the Orange County scene in the mid-'90s — the place and time to be for pop-punk and ska's nth revival — they've been kickin' around for close to 20 years. In the mid-'90s, bands with horns were a big deal. This was especially true in and around Southern California, where Reel Big Fish, Save Ferris, and The Aquabats all incubated, some graduating to major-label glory. Though they've never been ska in the strictest definition, RX Bandits were part of the same community and, sonically, weren't too far removed from [...]

http://media.libsyn.com/media/thebaybridged/Alternative_Rock_Mixtape.mp3 Download: New Alternative: The Bay Area's emerging noisy rock sound (Podcast #390) The post first ran on KQED.org. In recent years, a significant number of new bands have emerged citing alt-rock leaders like Sonic Youth and My Bloody Valentine, and the grunge scene as inspiration for their noisy indie rock. The stellar local label Father/Daughter Records has released a number of albums by local alternative-inspired [...]

Over the past decade and a half, he's released seven LPs of finely-tuned rock-pop for labels that include Castle Face, Third Man, and Sub Pop. Influenced by classic artists like The Kinks and The Beach Boys, Stoltz conveys a unique and ever-evolving interest in pop mixed with elements of psychedelia and garage rock. Even more impressively, his solo albums have [...]
