Locally-based experimentalist Holly Herndon is touring in support of her new album PROTO, which was just released on May 10 via 4AD. The PROTO tour begins May 16, and comes to San Francisco’s August Hall on May 20. Club Chai co-founders FOOZOOL and 8ULENTINA will support the San Francisco show with individual sets.

PROTO is Holly Herndon’s third full-length. Herdon recorded the project over the past couple years in collaboration with Mathew Dryhurst, their AI child named Spawn, and the PROTO Ensemble. Additional collaborators include Jenna Sutela, Jlin, Lily Anna Haynes, and Martie Syms. Herdon “operates at the nexus of technological evolution and musical euphoria,” using cutting-edge technology to acheive new sounds. The result is masterpiece of avant-garde futurism, with Herdon’s own singing voice echoing throughout the album. Some moments feel truly alien, while others reach euphoric heights of pop accessibility. As a blissfully disorienting headphones album, it should be really interesting to see how PROTO translates in a live setting. Watch the video for PROTO single “Eternal” below.

Be sure to get there early for FOOZOOL and 8ULENTINA, who are well-known in the Bay Area for their involvement with Club Chai, as well as their own solo projects. 8ULENTINA has a new EP out on TT called Bodyguard, as well as the Eucalyptus cassette on Club Chai. FOOZOOL’s alter-ego Lara Sarkissian released the Disruption EP via Club Chai’s label last winter.

Fans of forward-thinking electronic music would be wise not to miss this San Francisco show at August Hall on Monday, May 20. Buy tickets here.
