Oakland’s Classic Cars West will host a benefit concert this Thursday for Bay Area Solidarity Summer (BASS), a local, political action camp for young South Asian activists. The concert will feature performances from South Carolina’s Diaspoura, and BASS alumni including LA-based artist Kohinoorgasm and Bay Area-based songwriter mayx.

BASS, now in its ninth year, is a five-day political action camp for progressive South Asian American college-age youth who are interested in creating social change. The benefit show will host local artist Maya Acharya, who performs as mayx (pictured above), and also marks the beginning of Kohinoorgasm’s tour with Diaspoura.

Kohinoorgasm is the lo-fi dance project of “queer, mixed, desi artist” Josephine Shetty. As a self-managed, self-produced, and self-releasing solo artist and an advocate for marginalized and independent artists, Kohinoorgasm is set to headline Thursday’s community-oriented gig. Listen to their ethereal new Chalo EP above.

Diaspoura is a downtempo electronic producer and new media artist based in rural South Carolina. Their debut release Demonstrations was an experimental DIY project “documenting lived experience as a queer femme of color buried in the poor Deep South.” Watch the video for Diaspoura’s new single “Glisten” here.

mayx is a “queer desi songwriter, producer, and guitarist” based in the Bay Area. Get acquainted with their latest EP, time off (streaming below). Get there early to catch their set and show your support for local talent.

Watch all three artists perform for a good a cause at Oakland’s Classic Cars West on April 4, 2019. Starting at 7pm, donate $10-20 at the door for admission to the all ages benefit show.
