Wanna talk longevity in rock and roll? Let’s talk Spiritualized.

The project of mastermind Jason Pierce, formed in 1990 in England, he’s been at this big-sounds stuff for a long, long time. Spiritualized is often called “space rock” — Pierce has sort of adopted the title too, especially considering that his first band was literally called Spacemen 3 — but they’re really more like joy rock. They’ve made a name for themselves with a sound as big and expansive as the universe itself, but it’s one that could also sonically stand in for exuberance and exhilaration.

Getting their start at the dawn of the ’90s put them right on track to feed off the Britpop boom of the mid-late years of that era, and 1997’s Ladies and Gentlemen we are Floating in Space is considered their masterwork — even though its epic sound never quite matched up with the likes of Oasis and Blur. And though they’ve always been known for their big, big sounds, they’re only getting bigger: On some recent shows, Pierce has hired a full choir and orchestra to push the band’s limits even further.

After going toe-to-toe with a nasty bout of pneumonia and ultimately cheating death in 2005, Pierce got right back to work making music. HIs most recent album with Spiritualized, And Nothing Hurt, comes after a six-year hiatus — the longest he’s ever gone without releasing a record. Whether you’ve been a fan since the early years or just recently found them, we can send you to see them at the Masonic on March 30. Check out entry details below.
