Modern R&B has drastically shapeshifted over the last few years, evolving into something more of a spectrum than a genre. But Kali Uchis and Gabriel Garzón-Montano are two of the most enticing artists as of late, maintaining a familiar soulful sound that also pushes the boundaries of tradition. Uchis’ debut studio album, Isolation, was a long-time coming over the course of her young career, with collaborations with notable current artists such as Jorja Smith, Tyler, the Creator, and Steve Lacy.
Garzón-Montano fits into this same mold, though with an entirely different flavor and prerogative: Signed to Stones Throw Records, Garzón-Montano’s debut album Jardin explores soul’s depths and its reach across languages, baking his Spanish and French heritage into his lyrics and songs’ imagery. Both artists bring something unique and familiar to the table, a taste of R&B’s flourishes and future.
