If anyone needs a convenient introduction to Oakland’s thriving nightlife scene, look no further than this weekend’s Red Bull Music Presents Oakland: Block Party on July 28 at Geoffrey’s Inner Circle. Established in Downtown Oakland in 1993, Geoffrey’s Inner Circle is one of the few remaining Black-owned nightlife venues in Oakland. The club was recognized by the City of Oakland for its contributions to Bay Area culture and the local community, and recalls Oakland’s rich musical heritage while opening its doors to today’s bubbling underground scene.

Saturday’s special event will showcase six of Oakland’s most essential DJ crews. If you’re familiar with Club Chai, B-Side Brujas, Another Party Fam, NVR OVR, Smart Bomb, and The 45 Sessions, you already know about the magic that’s bound to happen when each of these influential collectives gather under one roof. If not, there’s no better time to get acquainted. Bringing a diverse range of styles and mediums to the table, each DJ will also contribute a visual element to their sets.

Founded by Lara Sarkissian (aka Foozool) and Esra Canogullari (aka 8ULENTINA) in 2016, Club Chai began as an event series with a mission to “boost diasporic narratives, highlight women, queer and trans artists and create new hybrids of club music an non-Western sounds.” In addition to their world-class DJ events, Club Chai has since evolved into a music label, radio show, and curatorial project based in Oakland. The collective reps an impressive roster of local and international artists and DJs including DJ Haram, Jasmine Infinti, Turbo Sonidero, and Russell E.L. Butler just to name a few. 8ULENTINA’s Eucalyptus was released earlier this year via Club Chai’s label.

B-Side Brujas is an “all-female vinyl DJ collective formed in 2016 pushing Soul and Cumbia sounds and women’s recognition in the male dominated music industry and DJ scene.” DJ Abrilita, DJ Lady Z, DJ Chatoyance, and DJ Cherry Moon are certified music connoisseurs, holding down the Bay Area nightlife scene with their genre-spanning vinyl mixes ranging from funk and soul, to salsa and disco. Sticking with the vinyl theme, The 45 Sessions will keep the party going on the 7-inch side of things with West Coast DJs like Z-Trip and Cut Chemist holding down the turntables.

Rounding out the showcase with the addition of futurist nightlife visionaries Smart Bomb and Oakland rap party mainstays NVR OVR and Another Party Fam, this Saturday at Geoffrey’s Inner Circle will definitely be one for the books.
