Today, we’re premiering a new music video from Bay Area queer feminist pop/R&B band Oh The Nerve. They are also performing a free show on Sunday, June 24 in conjunction with Pride Week celebrations hosted by Apple at Union Square.
The video for “Middle of the Bed,” directed by Jared Swanson with cinematography by Cedric Letsch, depicts the end of a suffocating relationship. Emotive choreography by professional ballroom dancers Chelsea Farrah-Koptke and Eric Koptke bring the tension to life. Sharing the vintage grooves of Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings and the blunt, lyrical honesty of Amy Winehouse, “Middle of the Bed” is the first single from Oh The Nerve’s upcoming EP Sweet Soul Music.
Oh The Nerve features lead vocalist and keyboardist Teresa Tuan, bassist Alena Coons, and Jess Fenton on lead guitar. The band came together when Tuan was looking to put together an all-female band in the Bay Area, and the three quickly bonded through the shared experience of feeling isolated and ignored as women in music. With frank lyricism from Tuan’s perspective as a gay, first-generation Chinese-American, their music deals with the complexity of navigating a multifaceted identity in contemporary America.
In conjunction with today’s video release, the band will also perform at a special two-day free event to spotlight LGBTQ+ artists this weekend. The event, called Today at Apple: SF Pride Weekend, will be held at Apple Union Square on Sunday, June 24 at 2:30pm. After the performance, the band will participate in a discussion led by Christina Luna, founder of the Asian American Music Conference.
Today at Apple: SF Pride Weekend will feature eight LGBTQ+ and ally musicians, dancers, and filmmakers from the Bay Area. Other highlights include sets from artist/actress/activist Ryan Nicole and Butterscotch, the world’s first female beatboxing champion. The event is free and all ages are welcome.
