This is a big week for queer electro-pop artist SUMif. Originally from Los Angeles, the rising San Francisco musician is set to perform at this year’s San Francisco Pride celebration at Civic Center Plaza on June 23 and just released a new single called “Body.” The summer tune is a perfect anthem for what is going to be a wild and feel-good weekend of celebration for the LGBTQ and ally community.
SUMif, real name Steph Wells, made her EP debut at the beginning of the year with Pretty Cage, a compilation of electronic pop songs that are extremely upbeat and well mixed, especially for an emerging independent artist.
In an interview with Atwood Magazine last year, Wells described how music streaming platforms helped her maintain her independence. “It’s cool to see actual money come through from Spotify, like, if I could get five times as many plays next year as I did this year, then I could almost be living off of that,” she remarked. “Honestly if you own your own master and you don’t have a label who takes it over, you can make good money from streaming.”
