Summer is block party season, and Civic Center has a hot one lined up for this Thursday.
Civic Center Commons — the public spaces around the Civic Center area in downtown San Francisco — is coming at you with a way better lineup than your average city-sponsored street festival. Rather than trucking in some two-hit wonders from the ’70s the way these things usually do, they’ve joined forces with Another Planet Entertainment. The local entertainment group has organized some of the best in top-notch local talent to play over the course of the summer for their Third Thursdays series.
The next one arrives on June 21, with performances from two Oakland-based artists: Sun Hop Fat and El Duo. Sun Hop Fat, from across the Bay in Oakland, is a blend of American jazz and Ethiopian-style melodies and a guaranteed good time. El Duo take things in a slightly different direction: one that’s still internationally-influenced, but more chill. Both bands are instrumental, but not synonymous with “boring.”
True to the name, there’s more Third Thursdays Block Party events coming up on July 19, Aug 16, Sept 20, and Oct 18. They’ll run 5-9pm for the happiest of happy hours in the Civic Center area.
If you work nights, they have similar events schedules for First Sundays, with more family-oriented activities and brunch-themed noshes.
