Don’t listen to this now! Take a drive on some open road and play this at maximum volume. Or lie down, close your eyes, and put on headphones at least. This is Wreche, the latest sounds from local piano guru John Steven Morgan and LA drummer extraordinaire Barret Baumgart. It is being called “black metal” ‐ but wait! ‐ this record is unique and perhaps a proper genre title does not exist yet. The instrumentation is almost entirely piano and drums. Both instruments are beaten to a pulp — literally. You can hear the piano wires being ripped out as the record begins. Then suddenly you’re off on a heart pounding adventure. There are some beautiful, tender moments, but mostly it is pure angst distilled to it’s very essence. It’s a super cathartic experience, as if you were able to scream loud enough for the whole world to hear you. We can all use a good scream right now.
There are no Wreche tour dates yet BUT John Steven Morgan and his super talented sister Crosby Morgan return to The Octopus Literary Salon this Friday the 13th (of October) – scary! The show is a fundraiser for the piano of John’s dreams. More details HERE.
