Big Thief are returning to San Francisco this weekend to perform a sold out headlining show at the Chapel on October 7. Don’t worry if you slept on tickets, they’re also playing a set at this year’s Hardly Strictly Bluegrass festival on October 6.
The Brooklyn quartet already reached acclaim upon the release of their debut album Masterpiece last year, recording their sophomore follow-up just a few months later. Their second album Capacity was released in June by Saddle Creek, and is still a top contender for album of the year for many music fans, including myself. Big Thief first hinted that something very special was on the way with the release of their video for “Mythological Beauty,” which you can watch below.
Adrianne Lenker’s songwriting sets the tone of the album, as her lyrics recall deeply personal memories of past traumas and relationships. Her gentle, dynamic vocal rhythm guides the narrative of each song, pushing and pulling the band between themes of personal growth and pained vulnerability. Capacity is an intricately crafted, emotionally cathartic folk-rock album that is sure to translate into an equally intense live experience. Big Thief will play the Rooster Stage at Hardly Strictly Bluegrass at 2:10pm on Friday, October 6, and at the Chapel with Little Wings and Mega Bog on Saturday, October 7.
