East coast rock ‘n soulers Lake Street Dive will be making the most of this coming weekend with a pair of Bay Area performances, wrapping their US-crisscrossing summer tour two weeks later. Last year the band released its fifth full length album, Side Pony.
Although the band recently played to good size crowd in the Fox Theater, they are a staple at breweries and outdoor venues all summer long. True to form, Saturday, August 26, the quartet appears in the South Bay at the Saratoga Mountain Winery; on Monday, they will head north for a performance in Petaluma as a part of the Live at Lagunitas series. Bay Area resident Bhi Bhiman will accompany Lake Street Dive on both occasions.
Rachel Price is the group’s dynamic frontwoman and her bluesy bellows and sultry swing are always on point and never over the top. The rest of the band – standup bassist Bridget Kearney, drummer Mike Calabrese and duel-weilding guitarist and trumpet player Mike Olson – is more staid, occasionally delivering a flashy solo.

With a repertoire of music that will take audiences from laid back SoHo coffeehouses to a cappella sessions in the park to dimly lit late-night cocktail bars and nearly everywhere in between, a Lake Street Dive show is a high energy, engaging event. Offering a fresh take on a retro sound, Lake Street Dive is poised to steal your heart.
“We’re playing a lot of stuff from Side Pony, kind of highlighting the songs from that,” Kearney said. “And then we’ve got some of the old standbys from Bad Self Portraits, kind of like some fan favorites of those. We also, as always, like to incorporate some covers into our set just as a way of inviting in some listeners that may be new to our sound.”
