Emily McLean shares "Simple" off upcoming "Shades" EP

Oakland-based singer-songwriter Emily McLean has slowly been stocking up on new music and finally shares a sliver of it with her newest single, “Simple,” produced by San Francisco’s Mars Today. The song follows the release of the first single, “Shades,” off of her upcoming EP of the same name, though the two widely differ in tempo and tone.

On “Simple,” McLean revels in the trials and tribulations of her would-be relationship. The situation is hardly simple but Mars’ production echoes in the background, with sparse claps and reverb. The “Shades” track is nearly the polar opposite — pounding bass and bright chords give the track a more upbeat vibe and McLean’s vocals and harmonies are lively. It’s a nice switch from McLean’s usually melancholy, folk-like soul, which may hint at a new sound to be featured on the EP.
