Lansing, MI-based art-pop and rock and roll band Joe Hertler and The Rainbow Seekers will be bringing their first national tour up the Central Coast for a pair of shows in the Bay Area this weekend.
On Friday, April 21, Hertler and his band will be joining Santa Cruz’s tight jam and funk affiliates LIGHT The Band for their every-other-Friday-night psychedelic soul cleanse at Bocci’s Cellar and on Sunday, April 23, they will be hitting the Brick and Mortar Music Hall in San Francisco.
Joe Hertler and The Rainbow seekers made a splash early in 2011 in the mid-Michigan rock and roll scene; after forming at Central Michigan University, the group earned performances at the Electric Forest Music Festival as well as high profile gigs in New York and at South by Southwest. Often wearing fur coats and Hawaiian shirts, with Joe Hertler wearing the state flag of Michigan as a cape, they were as visually entertaining live as they were proficient with their songwriting.
Recently, the band ran a Kickstarter to fund their third full length LP, Pluto, and the album was released on March 31 to high acclaim. Check out their music video for the album’s track, “Lonely”:
LIGHT The Band got their start in the old-fashioned union of a guitar and drum – Dan Guzman and Logan Tyler, respectively – as early as 2011. After the duo separated, reconnected and recruited bassist James Tashnick, they played their first proper show in December 2013.
Guzman and Tyler spent time playing in and out of Santa Cruz local legends 7 Come 11 before they finally split off on their own to focus on LIGHT. In 2015, the trio added another guitarist and songwriter, Tim Gan, to the mix and sees occasional saxophone particiaption from Chris Noonan.
The current iteration of LIGHT The Band solidified just last June, when they added a keyboard to the mix. A few months before earning a residency at the legendary San Francisco late-night party house, The Boom Boom Room, LIGHT The Band released a fifteen-track, self-titled album in December 2016. Check them out below:
Friday’s show will be played in memory of LIGHT The Band’s close friend, Ryan “Rocky” Pebbles. Rocky passed away unexpectedly last week and through seeing LIGHT perform over 100 times, witnessing his favorite band Umphrey’s McGee over 150 times, and his ultimate love of live music, his loss is felt here at home as much as it is across the country.
