The up and coming Brooklyn-based jazz fusion groove machine known as Moon Hooch will be all around the Bay Area this week, including a headlining slot in Santa Cruz and a date with ALO at The Fillmore.
The trio – made up of the dueling saxophones of Wenzl McGowen and Mike Wilbur over the tight-knit drumming of James Muschler — opens their California run today, Wednesday, February 22 in Santa Cruz at The Atrium.
The band is currently supporting their third LP, Red Sky. Though they are heavily inspired by electronic music, Moon Hooch made a conscious effort to use as few gimmicks in the recording process as possible in order to capture the sound of their incredible live shows.
They shoot north to Chico for a show on Thursday at Lost On Main before opening the first of two ALO shows at The Fillmore in SF on Saturday, February 24. Instead of sticking around to open the final show of ALO’s Tour D’Amour XI, however, they will cross the Golden Gate and make their way to The Mystic Theatre in Petaluma.
Moon Hooch got their start busking in the subways in and around NYC and have been on a wildly upward swing garnering attention at music festivals across the country. Check out their Tiny Desk Concert with NPR below.
