The entire beach town of Santa Cruz is gearing up for the return of Santa Cruz Music Festival this weekend, Saturday and Sunday, February 18 and 19. One of the biggest attractions to the largely free event is the 2017 Santa Cruz Music Festival Comedy Tour.

Both Santa Cruz Comedy Coalition, which is a loosely formed group of comics that support each other via attendance, promotion or acting as a stage hand from gig to gig, and Stand Up Santa Cruz, a group organized by Santa Cruz local comedic icon DNA, are largely responsible for putting the Comedy Tour together.

Dubbed by the Santa Cruz Weekly as “the underground comedy czar of Santa Cruz”, DNA is also a major player in the Bay Area, serving on the board for Comedy Day in Golden gate Park as well as the creation of two additional comedy festivals. 90% of DNA’s productions have been free to attend, and the Comedy Tour portion of SCMF is no exception.

“I think people need to laugh more than ever. Comedy shouldn’t be elitist. At the same time, yeah, we need to charge because that’s business and everyone needs to pay rent,” DNA said. “But free comedy is so important for people to come together and share laughter. It’s cathartic.”

Santa Cruz Music Festival 2017’s Comedy Tour is going to include many hours of abdominal-bruising laughs. Headlining comedians include a product of the SCZ and Bay Area comedy system, HBO & Comedy Central’s Brendan Lynch, Punchline’s Chad Opitz, Emily Catalano, Sam Weber, and Santa Cruz favorite, DNA. Additionally, Santa Cruz’s funniest of the Santa Cruz Comedy Coalition will have a chance to crack up the crowd.

On Saturday, the comedy tour will take place across three venues: from 7PM to 7:45PM at 99 Bottles, from 8:15PM to 9:45PM at The Food Lounge and from 10:15PM to 11:15PM at The Poet And Patriot.

On Sunday the comedy picks back up at The Poet from 7PM to 7:45, followed by another hour block starting at 8PM and going until 9PM at Rosie McCann’s, and concludes at 99 Bottles with an hour long set.
