the nth power tour dates

Next week, the NOLA soul band with a knack for funk grooves known as The Nth Power will return to the Bay Area for a pair of concerts. They are touring in support of their recently released live album, Live To Be Free.

On Tuesday, January 17 The Nth Power will headline Moe’s Alley in Santa Cruz and the next night, Wednesday, January 18, at The Boom Boom Room in San Francisco.

The Nth Power formed after a chance meeting at the 2012 JazzFest in New Orleans and is driven by drummer Nikki Glaspie, whose resume includes notes like former member of Dumpstaphunk and touring drummer for Beyonce.

Frontman Nick Cassarino oozes charisma with his wide gestures, sharp turns, and shredding guitar riffs, while bassist Nate Edgar holds down the tempo. On keys, Courtney Smith offers a widespread scope of sounds, from intricate and soulful atmospheric layering to in-your-face, no-holds-barred, funk throw-downs.

Check out this video from their appearance last spring at Slim’s in San Francisco. The Nth Power opened for Brooklyn powerhouse Turkuaz, whose horn section sat in for this take on Earth Wind & Fire’s “Serpentine Fire.”

Opening each evening of the West Coast jaunt, dubbed the Sundance Tour, will be California-based revivalist quartet The Sextones.

In 2014 the original trio of Mark Sexton, bassist Alexander Korostinsky and drummer Daniel Weiss employed the talents of keyboard virtuoso Ryan Taylor to complete their musical family and they haven’t looked back.
