There’s a haunting sweetness to “Forces of Decay,” the first song from Rogue + Jaye, a new collaboration between Rogue Wave‘s Zach Rogue and country crooner, Courtney Jaye. The two initially met during a songwriting session in December 2013, but quickly found an easygoing harmony as a creative duo. The results will be heard when their full-length record Pent Up is released in 2017.
Over her decade-long career, Courtney Jaye has spent time leaping across the musical map, moving between country, pop, and Americana. Her last album, 2013’s Love and Forgiveness was produced by Mike Wrucke (renowned for his work with Miranda Lambert). It was Courtney’s recent relocation from Nashville to Los Angeles that made this debut team-up a reality.
Meanwhile, Zach’s outfit — the beloved Bay Area indie rockers Rogue Wave, released their album Delusions of Grand Fur earlier this year, and just last month pressed a new LP for Record Store Day —’ the stunning, 1980s celebration Cover Me. The band will bring that pop-loving decade to the stage at Rickshaw Stop next month for Noise Pop Festival.
When it comes to Rogue + Jaye, Zach brings a calmer tone to life. There is a sparse intimacy that echoes in each guitar strum and every softly-sung note these two beautifully-paired artists submit on “Forces of Decay.” Here’s hoping the wait isn’t too long for more of it.
