Chances for a Bay Area Bloc Party concert looked bleak after the band took a hiatus in 2013. Now, back with a new album and lineup, the London natives showed the Bay Area how to party UK style at Mezzanine on September 19.

The band’s sound consists of synthesizer sounds mixed with a blend of edgy upbeat guitar riffs and haunting vocals. The song lineup included new songs like “So Real” off the newest album Hymns, as well as old classics such as “Banquet” from the band’s first album and “Mercury” off the band’s 2008 album Intimacy.

The English indie-pop band has come a long way since its first album Silent Alarm in 2005, and it showed during the group’s live set. Four albums later, singer Kele Okereke and guitarist Russell Lissack continue to present the same amount of raw energy fans have come to expect throughout the years. So much so that the band sold out the San Francisco venue that night. Yet, despite the lineup changes since the band’s early days, new keyboardist Justin Harris and drummer Louise Bartle were a refreshing addition to the band.
