San Francisco Bay Area group The Seshen will zip across the country during the month of October, but will return home for some Bay Area dates including a performance at The UC Theatre in Berkeley on the 22nd.
The upcoming dates will follow the release of The Seshen’s latest album, Flames & Figures, which is due out on October 14. Flames & Figures is the seven-piece band’s fourth release overall, and first full-length appearance on Tru Thoughts Records in 2014 following their 2012 self-titled debut and a pair of EPs.
Originally scheduled to be premiered on September 16, The Seshen released “Distant Heart” on the first of September instead. The latest introspective into the deep and emotive psyche of lead lyricist and singer Lalin St. Juste is complimented by the acute listening ear of bassist/producer Akiyoshi Ehara. Listen here:
About “Distant Heart,” St. Juste says it comes from coping with the suicide of a very close friend.
“She was an artist who had so much life inside of her; talented, ridiculously funny, and she had a huge heart. So I celebrate her through my art, I mourn her death through my art,” she said. “This song is my coming to peace with her decision and it symbolizes the fact that she passed her light to those who knew her to carry it forward, to hold it close…to create and live and dream. So there is energy and resiliency in this song despite the heartbreak.”
In addition to St. Juste and Ehara are five more forward-thinking musicians whose sound combines synthesizers, drum machines, live percussion, and entrancing harmonies to create an unmistakable fusion of modern R&B, synth-pop, and electronic music with a timeless core quality.
Vocalist Kasha Rockland, drummer Chris Thalmann, keyboardist and synth player Mahesh Rao, percussionist Mirza Kopelman, and crate-digger Kumar Butler round out The Seshen, taking inspiration from across the musical spectrum and blending typically unrelated genres to find the commonality within the beat and note.
