the coathangers

Download: Live This Month: May 2016 (Podcast #385)

In Live This Month, we sample some of the great local and out-of-town bands performing in the coming month in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Plenty of younger bands populate this month’s set of concert picks, but May’s highlights include a significant number of indie veterans. Take the Atlanta trio pictured above, The Coathangers, whose fifth album may be the group’s best yet. Local vets Rogue Wave returned last month after a three year break between records with their sixth LP, Delusions of Grand Fur, while the new LP from former local Chris Cohen (previously the leader of the supremely under-appreciated band Curtains) finds him further honing the psych-pop wizardry displayed on his 2012 solo debut.

Some excellent newer bands are also included in this mix, like Seattle indie-pop band Tangerine, and San Jose’s Curious Quail, a quintet mixing orchestral indie rock with chiptune electronics. On the more gothic side of things, dig the gloomy sounds of LA artist Drab Majesty, and Austin’s Cross Record.

Enjoy the podcast and then go see some concerts!
