Brainfeeder Flying Lotus George Clinton

Mark your fall calendars, this label is out to feed your brain this September. Brainfeeder, the Los Angeles-based label based founded by Flying Lotus and on the forefront of the experimental jazz scene, just announced a jam-packed lineup at the Fox featuring artists on their own label and others that fit their artistic vision of basically not fitting into any one genre box.

Headlining the night is FlyLo himself, the beat musician who mixes jazz and hip-hop with crazy vision and amazing samples. Also particularly notable is the appearance of George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic, the famed funk collective who were also just announced for a Bay Area comeback at the free Stern Grove Festival this summer. Also making an appearance is Shabazz Palaces, the Seattle-based hip-hop duo who made waves with their most recent Sup Pop output Lese Majesty, Thundercat, who won a Grammy last year for his work on Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp a Butterfly, and the Gaslamp Killer, the beat scene veteran who co-founded Low End Theory.

The night is set to be a killer display of diverse beats and sheer musicianship. Playboy, of all places, wrote a great piece about the history of jazz/hip-hop fusion and how Thundercat and other LA-based artists came together to make Lamar’s To Pimp a Butterfly. And speaking of collaborations, FlyLo, Thundercat, and Shabazz Palaces are a supergroup called WOKE and they put out a track called “The Lavishments of Light Looking,” also featuring George Clinton, that you can listen to below. It’s a hip-hop epic with anxious beats and lush production that confirms these artists’ greatness when they come together. Tickets go on sale today!
