It’s hard to overstate the influence of the Beach Boys’ 1966 masterwork, Pet Sounds. A 36-minute collection of emotional highs and lows, confessional lyrics, and melodies almost impossible to sing along to, it’s an album that, at 50 years old, is a frequent denizen of best-of lists and retains its relevance to just as many disillusioned young adults as it did in ’66.
Appropriately, there’s a tribute album in the works, and the lineup features a healthy helping of Bay Area bands: The She’s, Cool Ghouls, Shannon and the Clams, Burnt Ones, and Morgan Delt (who is no longer based here, but from San Jose).
The album is available for pre-order on April 1 and will be on sale at Austin’s Levitation Fest, if you’re down that way in late April. Listen to Shannon and the Clams’ only-slightly-more-effervescent version of “I Just Wasn’t Made For These Times” below.
