Western Massachusetts’ prolific guitarist and recording engineer Will Killingsworth (Orchid, Ampere) is bringing his post-punk venture to the Bay at the end of the month. Longings play a dense, cerebral and polished brand of melodic punk that doesn’t stray too far from the brand of angular rock that Killingsworth has made synonymous with his name.
Previously known as Bergerons Books, the newly minted Know Lodge in downtown Oakland will be hosting the show, a quaint gallery space around the corner from Goodmother Gallery, another artist space that has been hosting a lot of smaller events in the East Bay. Despite its Oakland location, supporting Longings are a trio of primarily San Francisco based punk acts, including Nopes, Spit Tips, and recent favorites Toyota. All three bands channel suburban angst into tense sounds, with Nopes and Spit Tips leaning towards garage influenced punk on opposite ends of the fidelity spectrum, and Toyota opting for a more obtuse and mech-punk approach to songwriting.
It’s cool to see Longings supported by a group of much younger bands, rather than relying on the network Killingsworth has likely built up over his many years of touring, and to be performing in a brand new venue, which will likely be a good fit for this more obscure project of his.
