Ensemble Mik Nawooj Krampus

December’s almost over, and you’re probably desperately trying to plan out the start of your 2016. But while the Christmas themes are fresh, let’s visit the twisted yet sweet holiday vision of Oakland hip-hop orchestra Ensemble Mik Nawooj with their video for “Last Donut.”

The song and video are based loosely around the late J Dilla’s sample-driven “Last Donut of the Night” (from his final record Donut), but they’ve traded the donut themes and Finnish setting for Klagenfurt, Austria, where their Krampus video star goes on a hurrah through the countryside and city center and eventually meets up with other Krampus-costumed figures. Overall, it’s a wonderful homage to the original video, and is as heartwarming of a story as anything about Krampus can possibly be.

The original song clocks in at just about under two minutes and features a patchwork of classic samples and record scratches, so there isn’t much material to work with. But, it’s a Kramp-mas miracle! The Ensemble really makes these pieces shine while amping the song up to a fully-realized hip hop production, with expansively warm orchestral compositions by JooWan Kim and tight freestyling by MCs Do D.A.T and Sandman Soprano. Take a peek at the video, which was directed by Matthew Bowman, below.

Ensemble Mik Nawooj have a new album due out next year, so keep your eyes peeled for more from the band in early 2016.
