yona-bird

For all you Parks & Recreation fans out there that will understand this metaphor, the Bay Area has its own Andy Dwyer. Well, at least the Johnny Karate part of his character arc. Meet Yona Bird

When he’s not jamming with his band Wicked Man, he’s teaching music classes at local preschools. A couple months ago, he took up a recommendation from one of the schools to perform original music, and he hasn’t looked back since.

He loves the opportunity of performing for preschool-aged kids, which he describes as being “like no other show.” In fact, he even said that since music and movement aren’t separate at their age, they’ve almost formed a mosh pit of dancing and screaming. He’s written around five songs so far for this project, and admits to testing out some of his outside material on the kids to see if it inspires movement.

We’re happy to premiere the video for his latest song, “Kevin the Dog,” which was filmed on a “manic, creative day” with his Wicked Man bandmate Justin and is (unfortunately) not inspired by a real dog. With a homemade green screen and tons of zany effects galore, the video stars Yona as the namesake, dressed in his finest dog ears and corduroy jacket. It’s a perfect match for the infectiously silly earworm of a song. You can watch it below.

In the future, he hopes to expand his audience of kids and plans to put out an album sometime next spring. But in the meantime, this little video should hold over the kid in all of us.
