She’s not based in the Bay Area anymore, but this jazz singer from San Jose is definitely making waves in her craft. While she was here, she collected such honors as being a finalist for 2014 Jazz Search West, which brought her to play shows at important local venues like Yoshi’s Oakland, Freight and Salvage, and the Sound Room. But ahead of her stellar musical resume, what makes Jackie Gage stand out is her incredibly soulful voice that she uses effortlessly as a powerful storytelling vessel.
The first taste of her debut album, which will be out in March of next year and titled Siren Songs, comes in the form of her single “It’s Your Love.” Unadorned and lovely, the song is the perfect jazzy mix of instruments that plays to the strengths of all musicians involved without sounding overbearing. Gage’s voice is velvety and lush, and if you heartbroken kids out there are reading into her lyrics, you’ll hear her painfully relateable lyrics of unrequited love. She admits that she wrote the song in her teens about a guy she had a crush on, but was only there to use her. Its subtle intricacies makes it a memorable listen for jazz fans and the opposite alike. And boy, is that the best glockenspiel line we’ve heard in quite a while. You can listen below.
We’re happy to see that modern jazz is building a burgeoning scene here in the Bay. Lucky for her fans out here, she’s making her way back home to California, where she’s embarking on a short tour through the Bay in early December. More info on her Oakland show is below!
