In the pantheon of un-Googeable band names (I’m thinking Girls, Women and the Men get top prizes, along with the most-NSFW one, Perfect Pussy), Shopping has to be right up there. Which is a shame (unless you’re into the whole rock mystique thing), since the art-rock trio has such an exciting brand of music to offer.
Based out of London, the band expertly borrows from some of its ancestral forebears who have perfected that ephemeral “UK” kind of sound. The icy minimalism of Young Marble Giants, the spiky guitars of Gang of Four, and the speak-songy elements of Art Brut and The Fall are all synthesized into pop tracks that are both brainy and dance-inducing. It’s post-punk work at its finest.
Currently touring behind their excellent sophomore album, Why Choose, Shopping will make their way to The Knockout on November 3. Local acts OVVN and Flesh World will open the show, which should be a good one in the Mission.
