Tobias Jesso Jr. is a throwback in all the best ways possible. He gets compared to the likes of Randy Newman and Harry Nilsson for his no-frills production and straightforward, earnest lyrics. His first album, Goon, came out earlier this year to wide acclaim; the album was short-listed for the 2015 Polaris Music Prize and earned him a devoted fan-base right out the gate. If you haven’t given the record a listen yet you should. It’s got a vintage sound that could easily border on parody but doesn’t, the production by Pat Carney of The Black Keys is spot-on and it features a who’s who of indie rockers providing backing instruments to the piano-driven songs. The guy only started playing the piano three years ago and it’s his lead instrument already.
I haven’t had the chance to see him live because he hasn’t made his way to the Bay yet, doing a few festival appearances earlier this year and sticking mainly to the East Coast. That all changes next Tuesday when he makes his Bay Area debut at the Fillmore with support from Wet. Tickets are still available for the show, but if you’d like to win some tickets for you and a friend, read below to enter to win a chance to be there for free.
