There are still people making good music in Orange County, braving the heat and carting equipment from practice studios to basements and back while spray tanned locals age gracefully around them. The OC’s Media Jeweler just released $99 R/T Hawaii – a frantic, pulsing rollercoaster equally indebted to math rock and art punk – and their friends in fellow OC rock group Fugue have been hard at work on their own record, a 9-song slab of riff heavy post-hardcore entitled No One Else.

Today the LA trio are streaming the record’s first single, “Guest”, and from the sound of it these three have been poring over Unwound’s discography, but giving the style their own spin, adding dense guitar where their hero’s might have woven wiry leads.

“Guest” starts by juxtaposing heavy guitar work with stuttering palm mutes and sassy vocals. The guitar work is interesting and production definitely furthers the band’s goals, aiding the riff-centric songwriting. The sparse, angsty vocals populate only sections of the song, and I’m left wanting more presence from them. Frantic riffage breaks down into a meditative post-rock jam near the song’s middle, and winds its way to a dreamy close.

The record is coming out later this year on cassette via the band’s own label, Avocado Records, and the three some will be heading up north in late November. Check out their upcoming shows below ~
