Best Coast - Janell Shirtcliff

It’s hard to think of a more contemporary California rock band that’s more representative of our golden state than L.A.’s Best Coast.  They wear their California pride on their sleeve without a hint of irony, which has been apparent since their first album, and continues up to their most recent release of California Nights earlier this year. Guitarist Bobb Bruno provides the band’s layers of breezy 60s beach rock rhythms while singer and guitarist Bethany Cosentino brings the melodies to their deceptively simple sound. The band tours with a full band (Brady Miller on drums, Brett Mielke on bass and San Francisco’s very own Joe Bautista of Whirr on guitar).

I remember seeing Best Coast at Treasure Island Music Festival in 2012 and they brought a much-needed sense of fun to the day. Not to say that the lineup was suffering, but it was hard not to hear the opening chords of “The Only Place” and suddenly find your feet tapping along. Their performance was fitting for all the right reasons, the sun was starting to set and they were playing on frickin’ Treasure Island with the Bay Bridge right there and the Golden Gate Bridge in the background. It doesn’t get much more Californian than that.

Best Coast is returning to The Fillmore this Wednesday and bringing along Lovely Bad Things. Tickets are still available for the show but if you’d like to win some tickets for you and a friend, well, there’s some details below for you to win a chance to be there for free.
