There’s a new music festival on the (relatively nearby) block. The Broken Strings Folk Punk Fest (put on by SF IndieFest) will take place September 26th at Camp Pollock in Sacramento, a former Boy Scout campground by the American River, and will be a celebration of the folk punk genre.
If you’re not familiar with what folk punk entails, here’s what the festival organizers have to say about it:
Broken Strings is an exploration of folk punk, a loosely-defined underground genre combining the energy of punk rock with the personal, stripped-down appeal of folk music. Both kinds of music value immediacy and shared experience. Folk punk doesn’t need big amplifiers and fancy effects; it’s music to hear and see up close. The result is a wide range of music; mostly (but not always) acoustic, mixing traditional music like bluegrass and klezmer with the raw energy of punk.
The Broken Strings festival will feature a variety of bands who encompass this genre (full lineup and schedule below). For the festival itself, attendees can enjoy the music and the overall atmosphere, and even go go swimming in the river (might be a good idea in the typical Sacramento heat!).
