Jenny Lewis

Still touring behind her standout 2014 album, The Voyager, Jenny Lewis will bring her act to the Fox Theater in Oakland on May 28.

The former lead singer for the dearly-departed Rilo Kiley, Lewis has crafted an admirable solo career, capped by the release of The Voyager, a candid, vulnerable rumination about looking back on life’s lost opportunities.

Nostalgia envelops the atmosphere of The Voyager, which seems appropriate for Lewis, a former child actor who lacked the normalcy she often pines for her in her songs.

Never absent from the spotlight, Lewis is a natural performer, which makes her truthful renditions of the touchy subjects covered in The Voyager all the more disarming live.

Lewis’ show at the Fox Theater will mark her second appearance in the Bay Area in the past six months, following a memorable December 14 performance at The Masonic opening up for Ryan Adams, who produced The Voyager. Lewis drew heavily upon her latest album during that concert, but also uncorked some Rilo Kiley classics, including show-closer, “With Arms Outstretched.”

Although she has been a familiar presence in the Bay Area in recent times, Lewis went six years between recording her second and third albums. She’s touring through the end of August, but a similar hiatus may be in the future.

Anyone who misses the show on Thursday risks the possibility of not seeing this talented singer-songwriter for quite some time. She’s worth the trip.
