Harry Nilsson

Heads up, Harry Nilsson-heads: Eight Belles have released a lovely cover of “Living Without You,” as a preview for a tribute concert, featuring a long list of performances from Bay Area artists. It’s actually a Randy Newman tune, but is closely associated with Nilsson, and either way it’s gorgeous. The song also features a supporting cast of other Bay Area musicians: Shaun Lowecki, Braden Young, and Joel Robinow. Listen below.

As we mentioned, Viracocha’s plotting a Harry Nilsson tribute night, titled “Don’t Forget Me.” It’s scheduled to take place on the 20th, with performances of Nilsson songs from Bay Bridged favorites like DonCat, Once and Future Band, Cave Clove, and way more.

Though he’s long been a lesser-known favorite among musicians and classic-rock aficionados, Nilsson’s been receiving some (posthumous) recognition from the general public as of late, with a documentary that went into wide release in 2010 and a 2013 biography that detailed his life, music, and many demons. He’s most famous for “Without You” and “Everybody’s Talkin’,” a song you’ve probably heard over closing credits, a store P.A. system or, most recently, in an iced tea commercial starring the Muppets. He’s also the “put the lime in the coconut” guy, and good luck getting that out of your head.
