With three of the band’s four members just returning from a cross-country tour with Waters, the last thing I expected was to hear from The Tambo Rays about any new music. But late last week, I received an email from none other than Sara DaMert (aka Sara Sonic) letting me know that the Rays were ready to drop a new single “LIL FREQ”.
Well, of course I took her up on the offer, and we’re ecstatic to premiere this chillest of all chill wave tracks today on The Bay Bridged. “LIL FREQ is about acknowledging the self as more capable than the constraints of the reality we are in,” Sara wrote. “For me, this realization brought on cluttering expectations that latched on to my every idea as if weighted by a thousand thoughts.”
The band almost named the song “Go Slow” because that was a big part of letting go of these expectations and focusing on present moment experiences. “It’s a lighthearted song but I hope people find it a lil empowering and just opening yourself up a lil to that idea is a good place to start,” Sara explained.
“LIL FREQ” was recorded at the band’s house in Oakland, and it was mixed by Ross Harris at 25th Street Recording. Listen (and download for FREE) below, and then get full details on The Tambo Rays’ show this Friday at the Chapel – it’s the second annual Solstice In Stereo put on by Foxtails Brigade, celebrating the Winter Solstice. Ash Reiter joins the bill in her last appearance (for the foreseeable future) under her solo moniker.
