“Violent Shiver” is an apt name to describe the sort of music Benjamin Booker makes—it’s affecting, arresting, and even a bit combative. He came howling out of New Orleans, fresh to live music in every sense, and yet that didn’t stop Jack White (yep, that Jack White) from recruiting him to open for him on his most recent tour.

Only two years after his first show, he’s signed a label deal, played Letterman, Conan, and Lollapalooza. And soon, he’ll play a couple shows here in the Bay too. As a matter of fact, his self-titled debut album drops the same day he plays the new Leo’s Club in Oakland, so there will be plenty of reasons to celebrate his brand of rough, garage-fuzz blues.

And it’s a heady sound. Booker’s raspy throttle alongside gut-punches of blurry guitar riffs is his own type of vicious verve. It’s fierce and eclectic, like Booker’s own influences—Gun Club, Blind Willie Johnson, and T. Rex—and it uproots notions of genre into harsh, ragged sonic textures in a category of its own.
