Kevin Morby @ 1-2-3-4 Go! Records

A few months ago Oakland’s raddest record shop expanded their store to nearly twice its original size, and substantially increased their vinyl selection. Tonight, if you can tear yourself away from thumbing through the 7-inches, you should wander into 1-2-3-4 Go! Records‘ backroom where Kevin Morby, Mall Walk, and The Younger Lovers will all play very intimate sets.

Kevin Morby looks shockingly young if you’ve only listened to his music. The first time I saw him at Brick and Mortar I covertly Google Image’d him to double-check he wasn’t some kid who had wandered on-stage. As the former bassist in Woods and the singer/songwriter/guitarist in The Babies, and already touting a well-received solo album (Harlem River), it’s understandable that I expected someone a little more grizzled from prolific weight alone. This summer you could have found him touring and playing shows with Real Estate, Steve Gunn, and Small Black, while planning for a forthcoming album out on Woodsist Records (operated by Woods) this fall. Check out the official music video for the title track from his debut solo album below.

Openers Mall Walk and The Younger Lovers are both Oakland-based. Mall Walk sucks you into lo-fi squealing guitars paired with vocals that sound emotionally removed and hinge on apathy, while The Younger Lovers have opened at Great American Music Hall for NONONO, and sound like pop punk’s smirky half-brother.
