Shaggy Sample

Oakland’s Shaggy Sample, fronted by David Jaberi and his Wurlitzer, just released their debut album of throwback pop entitled My Other Car Is. Shaggy Samples’ members previously played with a variety of bands: drummer Evan Hashi played with the psychadelic country outfit Lazer Zepplin, bassist Charlie Biando made experimental pop with Hermit Thrushes while Jaberi and guitarist Mark Deutsch form the appropriately named rap/R&B duo Jaberi & Deutsch. Somehow all those influences came together to make smooth, classic grooves that are simply melodic and fun. And how did they get their name? “David had a song we tried to play that had a sample from Shaggy’s ‘Boombastic'”, explains Hashi. “Somehow that turn of phrase stuck, and, unable to find any other better alternatives, it became our name.” Did I mention Shaggy Sample is fun? Listen to My Other Car Is below, or purchase it on cassette via Bandcamp.

Shaggy Sample performs this Saturday, August 16 at Goforaloop Gallery (right next to Potrero del Sol) before heading to the Pacific Northwest for a tour.
